Alateen: Support For Teens Dealing with Alcohol Problems
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is the largest organization in Sonoma County that helps with addiction. While AA is aimed for direct support to those struggling with addition, for teens, it may be a bit more difficult to find help for those close to them. Alateen is an organization similar to AA that supports teens whose lives may have been affected by alcohol, especially when someone close to them has a drinking problem. Many teens may share a common problem of someone abusing them mentally or physically due to drinking, and supporting these teenagers is what Alateen is for.
Alateen is part of the Al-anon family group and is a fellowship of young teens. Alateen meetings are all about sharing a victim’s experience, discussing what is going on in their lives and learning coping skills. “It’s provided a safe space for students who have loved ones who are dealing with alcoholism and other addictions,” said Human Interactions and English teacher Shereen Jackson. It has given many students suffering from these problems a place to talk with others experiencing similar things, and can be a very positive experience.
